The State Archive of the Vitebsk Region (Учреждение «Государственный архив Витебской области») is the central archival institution for preserving historical documents from the Vitebsk area of Belarus. Its holdings cover the period from 1917 to the present, with some materials dating back to the 19th century. The archive holds over 2,300 collections (fonds) and more than 1.3 million archival units.
Its records are essential for genealogical and historical research, with materials from local soviets, revolutionary committees, courts, notarial offices, industrial enterprises, educational and cultural institutions, and even German occupation authorities from 1941–1944. The archive also holds documents on land nationalization, collectivization, and repressions.
Key topics include civil and criminal court records, land transactions, school records, population lists, and files on repressed individuals. Notable fonds contain information on public figures such as Marc Chagall and Kazimir Malevich, and on local industry, agriculture, and wartime damage reports.
