The State Archive of the Gomel Region

The State Archive of the Gomel Region (Государственный архив Гомельской области) preserves documents dating from 1917 to the present day. It is an important regional repository that holds over 600,000 archival units across more than 2,600 fonds, covering the administrative, social, and economic life of the Gomel region and adjacent territories.

Among its holdings are records from the now-defunct Gomel Governorate (1919–1926), which also included parts of present-day Mogilev, Vitebsk (Belarus), Chernihiv (Ukraine), and Bryansk (Russia) regions. The archive also contains materials from the abolished Svetilovichi, Uvarovichi, and Terekhov districts, as well as current Gomel city and districts such as Buda-Koshelevsky, Vetkovsky, Gomelsky, Dobrushsky, Kormyansky, and Chechersky.

The archive’s origins date back to 1922, when the Mogilev-Gomel Archival Bureau was first created. It underwent multiple reorganizations during the Soviet era, eventually becoming the State Archive of the Gomel Region in 1941. After a hiatus during the German occupation (1941–1943), the archive resumed work and continues to operate under its current name since October 15, 2001.
